My name is Ian Soutar and I would like to tell you my story on how I came to discover BSR.
I first suffered from back pain after an accident playing football more than twenty years ago. This was the beginning of a life plagued with recurring bouts of pain due to my “dodgy” back. I visited Chiropractors and Osteopaths whenever necessary as I did not believe that taking prescription drugs was a solution to relieving my pain. The alternative health care professionals all helped my condition and enabled me to continue to function after a fashion but the “collapsible” back always returned. I consoled myself that I would just have to live with my bad back and get on with life as best I could. In 2002 I was involved in an accident that left me with a leg that had been fractured in three places. The fractures healed in time but I was left with a pronounced limp and reduced mobility.
Waking up in the morning, struggling out of bed and taking what seemed like an age to walk off a stiff and aching back had almost always been an everyday occurrence for me but after my accident, I was woken during the night with excruciating leg cramps which forced me out of bed in order to walk the cramps off. Again, I just accepted this new inconvenience and hoped that my condition would improve with time. My general health had also been deteriorating over the years; I suffered; amongst other things, from Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Bells Palsy. Looking back, I now know and recognise that a stressful working environment was also a contributing factor in my deteriorating health.
Quite by chance, I read an article in a newspaper about a journalist who had gone to see a Body Stress Release Practitioner in Edinburgh because of a back problem that she had. The journalist reported on the positive outcome that she had experienced from the BSR sessions and went on to explain many of the conditions that BSR may assist with. I noticed that leg cramps were one of these and decided to make an appointment with the practitioner in Edinburgh.
After my first BSR session, I must admit to being slightly sceptical as the Practitioner had worked very lightly on me and just seemed to poke and prod in various areas up and down my spine. I did however feel “different” in some way. At my second appointment my Practitioner asked me how my back felt. I informed her that my back had been “knackered” for years and that I didn`t expect miracles to happen overnight. She then asked me about my leg cramps and I thought hmmmm! strange but I haven`t had any since I last visited you. On my way home from this second appointment, I again felt so much looser and freer and decided to find out a bit more about this little known technique called BSR. After much Googling and research, I decided that I had to train to become a qualified BSR Practitioner.
